Tensions were running high by Notorious, with guitarist/songwriter Andy Taylor only contributing four songs before embarking on his solo career. Duran Duran scored their first US 1 hit in 1984 with ' The Reflex ,' which opens with a stuttering 're-re-reflex' vocal created by Nile Rodgers with a sampler - it was the first track Rodgers worked on for the band. The band had planned for a much-needed break after the success of their 1984 world tour, but all of the band members had ended up working on one of two side projects - the hard-rock collective of The Power Station in early.
