Plan these things if possible and discuss with the person, allow them time to look for another position etc. Hearts, flowers and weeping I don't want, but some thought on the impact that these decisions have on the person, their self esteem, their personal and financial situation and their ability to secure another position. There are far more compassionate ways of 'cutting cloth' On Monday the 17th September I was fully employed and on Tuesday 18th I wasn't, what I have to show for it is a letter with 4 lines of type. I fully understand the commercial world of Health and Social Care, I've been around long enough and seen a lot of changes to appreciate the sector we work in, but I would ask that if you ever find yourself as an employer, in the position where you feel you need to remove certain roles from your structure, please give some thought as to how you do this, and remember that on the other end of the news is a real skilled person, with a life and responsibilities outside of the workplace. Whilst this is an acceptable way of working in regards to employment law etc, it has devastating effects on the person, as I now know! A few months ago I left a role I had had for some time, for what was to be an exciting opportunity to take my knowledge and skills as an experienced Quality and Governance Director (many other skills included!) to a new organisation 'with a twist' After being in post for just 3/12 and, I have to say, achieving a lot, the CEO decided to make budget cuts, and the 'last in first out' rule was applied.
